Using Simulation Models to Optimise the Development and use of Oncology Innovations

Monday Lunch Livestream

With Dr Koen Degeling

19 April 2021

Hear from the Centre for Cancer Research fellow Dr Koen Degeling, who introduces the concept of simulation models and demonstrate their role in health technology assessment.

Simulation models are routinely used to estimate the health economic impact of drugs and medical devices, typically assessing whether their use is cost-effective and accessible.

Dr Degeling’s presentation provides practical and methodological guidance essential to the adoption of patient-level simulation techniques within health economics and health services research.

He explores the technology development and oncology care through several case studies including the use of simulation models to set priorities in the development of liquid and tissue-based biomarkers for risk stratification in prostate cancer, as well as their use to optimise treatment selection for metastatic colorectal cancer.

Dr Koen Degeling

Dr Koen Degeling is a Research Fellow in Cancer Health Services Research within the Centre for Cancer Research and Centre for Health Policy of the University of Melbourne. His research focuses on the use of advanced simulation methods to model personalised oncology care pathways, with a particular interest in the use of real-world data from clinical registries. He is involved in several research projects across the VCCC and received the 2020 Rising Star award from the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health in recognition of the extent and impact of his recent work, which includes the use of simulation models to estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on long-term outcomes for cancer patients.
