Radiation Therapy in Melanoma: Enhancing Nursing Knowledge and Patient Care

This webinar is designed for melanoma nurses seeking to expand their knowledge of radiation therapy in melanoma treatment.
While surgery and systemic therapies remain the primary approaches, radiation therapy plays a crucial role in select cases. This session will explore when and why radiation is used, including its role in adjuvant therapy, palliative care, treatment of inoperable cases, and brain metastases. Nurses will gain insights into radiation techniques, expected patient responses, and common side effects, equipping them with the knowledge to provide comprehensive care and patient education.

- The indications for radiation therapy in melanoma
- The role of radiation therapy in adjuvant, palliative, and metastatic settings

Speakers
Professor Angela Hong
Deputy Medical Director and Radiation Oncologist at MIA and a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney.
Professor Angela Hong is a radiation oncologist with expertise is in the management of melanoma and skin cancer, bone and soft tissue tumour (sarcoma). As a clinician-scientist, Professor Hong is committed to both clinical and translational research to advance the field of radiation oncology.
Completing her undergraduate medical degree at the University of Sydney, Professor Hong then moved to the USA to take up a research role at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York and the University of California, Davis. She returned to Australia to start her specialist training in radiation oncology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and completed her Master of Medicine and PhD degrees at the University of Sydney. She was awarded the prestigious Kaye Scott Prize by the Royal Australia and New Zealand of Radiologists for her exceptional performance during the fellowship examination.
Professor Hong is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and treatment guidelines including the Australian Melanoma Clinical Practice Guideline and UptoDate, and regularly presents at international conferences as well as locally to other specialists, registrars and allied health. Professor Hong is also the principal investigator of several clinical trials in melanoma and sarcoma.
Professor Hong is currently a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney.
Joshua Hart
Nurse Unit Manager Radiotherapy, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Joshua is the Radiotherapy NUM at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s Parkville campus with post graduate qualifications in Cancer and Palliative Care, and has over 15 years’ experience as a Cancer Nurse. Joshua leads a team of 20 nurses to support consumers and their families survive cancer treatment well with a focus on innovation, holistic care, customer service, and evidence based practice.
