Professor Steve Trumble will cover some of the key skills for supervisors and mentors to be effective in their roles and leave a lasting impact. 

An effective supervisor/mentor is someone who plays a crucial role in team members and mentees by providing effective leadership, guidance, and support. 

Whether you're guiding a team or nurturing the growth of emerging talent, this workshop is your opportunity to hone your skills and become even more influential in your role.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key issues about which supervisors/mentors need to speak with their team members/mentees

  • Gain the confidence and skills to initiate difficult conversations and resolve conflict

  • Use a coaching model of supervision to help team members/mentees to achieve their best

 

Presenter: Professor Steve Trumble

Prof Steve Trumble is a professor in the Melbourne Medical School’s Department of Medical Education, of which he was foundation Head from 2015 until 2022. He is a general practitioner by training and began his academic career at Monash University, where he established a unit for improving healthcare provided to adults with developmental disabilities. After a period leading the RACGP’s vocational training program, he joined the University of Melbourne in 2003. A passionate educator, Steve’s major interests are in learner-centred curriculum development, strategies for improving GP workforce distribution, and promoting effective models of clinical supervision.

Chair: Dr Keely Bumsted O'Brien

Keely Bumsted O'Brien is a Project Manager - Education and Engagement at Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute. Keely is a Scientific Education Leader and Consumer with a background in Neurobiology. After leading her own research group for several years, she transitioned to an academic teaching-focused role at WEHI, where she served as the Head of the Scientific Education Office from 2010 to 2022. She is a Consumer Advocate, collaborating with researchers and the cancer community to enhance treatment outcomes.
