Join Chris Williams and Dr Jeremy Lewin to discuss how to define best practice and develop a nationally-guided optimal care pathway to deliver high-quality care for adolescents and young adults with cancer.

Optimal care pathways (OCPs) have been developed and nationally endorsed for most tumour streams and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) people with cancer. Recognising the unique needs of AYA with cancer and informed by there commendations of the Youth Cancer Framework, the Victorian Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service and ONTrac at Peter Mac Victorian Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Service collaborated to lead the development of a nationally endorsed OCP for AYA with Cancer.

This presentation will provide an overview of the rationale, development, and consensus review process of the document. Following this, several key indicators from the pathway will be highlighted and discussed. The session will finish with how this document can be used to deliver an equitable, high-quality model of care that is responsive to the unique needs of AYA.

Participants can learn:

• the unique needs of AYA with cancer and rationale for a defined pathway
• the process for achieving national endorsement for a specific sub-population group in cancer care
• some examples of key recommendations in AYA cancer care

Chris Williams 
Nurse Consultant, Victorian Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service 

Chris Williams is a nurse consultant with the Victorian Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service, based at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. Chris was the lead author of the Optimal Care Pathway forAdolescents and Young Adults with Cancer. Chris has previously authored the Victorian Cancer Care pathways for paediatric leukaemia, CNS tumours and solid tumours.

Dr Jeremy Lewin
Medical Oncologist, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.Medical Director, ONTrac at Peter Mac Victorian Adolescent & YoungAdult Cancer Service, Melbourne 

Dr Jeremy Lewin is the Medical Director of ONTrac at Peter Mac Victorian Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Service. Jeremy provides medical leadership for the service which delivers quality care for young people, a statewide professional education program and targeted clinical research aimed at addressing the major health concerns of young people and their families. Jeremy holds leadership and strategic positions both locally and nationally, including being the Research and Education lead for sarcoma for the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Adolescent & Young Adult Medicine Committee for the Royal Australian College of Physicians and Scientific Advisory Committee for the Australia and New Zealand Sarcoma Association.
