This webinar is tailored for melanoma nurses aiming to deepen their understanding of endocrine complications associated with immunotherapy for patients with melanoma.

This session provided an overview of endocrine-related adverse events linked to immunotherapy, and focuses in detail on the effects on the thyroid and pituitary gland, including their recognition, management, and long-term implications for patient care. Nurses will gain insights into effective approaches for identifying and managing complications equipping them with the knowledge to offer comprehensive care and patient education. 

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify common endocrinological toxicities following immunotherapy
  • Demonstrate an understanding in assessing patients for signs and symptoms of endocrinological toxicities related to the thyroid and pituitary gland.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the nurse’s role in delivering patient-centred education and support related to potential endocrinological side effects of immunotherapy.

Speakers

Dr Anna Galligan 
General Physician and Endocrinologist

Dr Anna Galligan is an Endocrinologist and General Physician. She studied medicine at Monash University and underwent dual specialist training through St Vincent’s Hospital, the Royal Hobart Hospital and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.  Anna consults in all areas of endocrinology. Her interests include diabetes, diabetes technology, women's health, antenatal endocrinology and weight management.

Anna holds public appointments in Endocrinology at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and The Royal Women's Hospital Melbourne. She is the lead endocrinologist for the St Vincent's Hospital High Risk Foot Service. 

Anna's research thesis, completed at the University of Melbourne (2021) in conjunction with St Vincent's Institute and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, focused on the effects of cancer immunotherapy on the endocrine system.
