Additional Resources for Patients

Published Erin Turner on

Here are some videos that can be shared with your patients as educational and supportive resources. Some of the videos include the perspectives of healthcare professionals, whilst others share the voices and experiences of people with a lived experience of cancer. Please note, not all of these videos will be relevant to your patient, and some may also be beneficial to watch as the clinician.

Dr. Betty Martin explains the Wheel of Consent, a practice of taking turns receiving and giving. The Wheel of Consent is a model of consent based on, but not requiring, exchanges of touch. The Wheel notes the distinction between the ‘doing’ aspect of the touch dynamic — who is doing — and the ‘gift’ aspect — who it is for. For example, you may be touching another person for their enjoyment, or you may be touching them for your own enjoyment. Both of those dynamics are welcome and needed in different situations, and once the distinction is clear, the entire touch dynamic becomes clear, which brings ease, confidence, self-responsibility and freedom to the interaction. When the dynamics are clear, it becomes apparent how they apply to both touch and non-touch dynamics. Indeed, the application to non-touch dynamics may be of greater import.

Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex by Joan Price

Joan Price is talking out loud about later-life sexuality. With a foreword by Betty Dodson, ''Naked at Our Age'' candidly addresses senior sexuality in all its colors — the challenges, disappointments, and surprises, as well as the delights and the love stories. ''Naked at Our Age'' gives people over fifty a voice to tell stories of their past and present sex lives, ask questions, and get straightforward advice and information from experts. No topic is off-limits.

In ''Naked at Our Age'', women and men - coupled and single, straight and gay - talk candidly about how their sex lives and relationships have changed with age, and about how they see themselves, their partners, or their single life. Many are having unsatisfying sex, or no sex at all, and are seeking advice. Price presents their personal stories, and follows up with tips from sex therapists, health professionals, counselors, sex educators, and other knowledgeable experts. Named Outstanding Self-Help Book of 2012 by the American Society of Journalists and Authors and winner of the 2012 Book Award from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, ''Naked at Our Age'' is an entertaining and indispensable guide to handling and understanding the issues of senior sex and relationships.
