Metastatic Ocular Melanoma

Published Caitlin Broomhall on

This webinar was tailored for nurses aiming to deepen their understanding of metastatic ocular melanoma. It explored risk factors and metastatic patterns, screening and diagnostics, and discussed prognosis and treatment options, including current trials. Nurses gained insights into patients' unique risk factors for metastasis and tailored approaches to surveillance and treatment options, and, from a lived experience consumer, learned about the impact of living with ocular melanoma and different treatments — equipping them with the knowledge to offer comprehensive care and patient education as critical members of the multidisciplinary team.

01 Welcome and speaker introductions (opens in a new tab) 0:00 → Introduces medical oncologist Associate Professor Matteo Carlino and consumer representative Adrian Dodd. 02 Ocular vs cutaneous melanoma: biology and genetics (opens in a new tab) 3:28 → Explains how ocular melanoma differs from skin melanoma in its genetics, immune profile, and pattern of spread, most often to the liver. 03 Diagnosis, local treatment and prognostication (opens in a new tab) 10:56 → Covers how ocular melanoma is diagnosed and locally treated, and how genetic testing classifies tumours into risk groups to predict recurrence. 04 Surveillance and liver-directed therapies (opens in a new tab) 15:51 → Discusses how patients are monitored for liver metastases and the local treatment options available when the disease is confined to the liver. 05 Systemic therapy: tebentafusp, immunotherapy and targeted therapy (opens in a new tab) 20:52 → Explains how HLA testing determines treatment choice, covering tebentafusp for HLA-positive patients and immunotherapy or targeted therapy options for HLA-negative patients. 06 Emerging trials and novel drug delivery (opens in a new tab) 31:34 → Introduces newer treatments in development, including a targeted antibody-drug approach and an injectable virus-based therapy. 07 Closing summary: why specialised care matters (opens in a new tab) 34:01 → Emphasises that ocular melanoma should be managed by specialists and that clinical trials should be considered at every stage. 08 Patient perspective: Adrian's ocular melanoma journey (opens in a new tab) 35:49 → Follows Adrian's diagnosis, his decision between treatment options, and his experience undergoing radiation therapy in Melbourne.

Associate Professor Matteo Carlino

Speaker

Associate Professor Matteo Carlino

Medical Oncologist

Matteo Carlino is a Medical Oncologist at Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals, a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, and a faculty member at Melanoma Institute Australia. He undertook a PhD examining predictors of response and mechanisms of resistance to BRAF and MEK inhibitor treated melanoma, and continues to be involved in translational research, particularly examining response and mechanisms of resistance to both targeted and immunotherapy. He has a clinical interest in the treatment of melanoma, non-melanoma skin cancer and uveal melanoma, and is an investigator on multiple Phase I, II and III clinical trials.

Adrian Dodd

Speaker

Adrian Dodd

Consumer Representative

In March 2022, Adrian was diagnosed with a tumour on his eye by Albury Eye Clinic and was referred to a Melbourne ophthalmologist who diagnosed melanoma on the optic nerve. Radiotherapy shrunk the tumour, however it resulted in multiple complications requiring removal of the eye this year. Throughout a long career as an accountant, Adrian has run his own accounting practice and consulted widely. Adrian has had lots of restrictions and setbacks since his diagnosis and treatment, and hopes that sharing his journey will help anyone who has contact with or provides treatment to any future patients.
