Join a panel of experts led by Professor David Wiesenfeld for a one-day symposium to raise awareness of oral and oropharyngeal cancers, and learn about the crucial importance of early diagnosis.

Discover how multidisciplinary care for patients diagnosed with these cancers can improve outcomes and save lives.

The early diagnosis, referral and treatment of patients with oral or oropharyngeal cancers can save lives. Early interventions can also improve speech and swallowing function and may help reduce disfigurement as well as all its associated physical and psychological consequences.

  • Oral and oropharyngeal cancers and the importance of early detection

  • Benefits of early detection and identifying the correct referral pathway

  • Basic principles, surgical management and how primary care can assist

  • Advances in radiation oncology for head and neck cancers in the past three years

  • Critical issues with dental planning prior to cancer treatment

  • Oral and oropharyngeal complications post-treatment: surgical, radio oncology, speech and swallowing, nutritional and psychological

  • Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS)

  • Pre/post and long-term care head and neck radiation treatment and general dental management post-cancer treatment

  • Osteoradionecrosis: prevention and management

  • Complex dental rehabilitation and the role of the general dental

Primary care has a key role to play in achieving optimal outcomes for people with oral and oropharyngeal cancers.  This session will assist primary care practitioners to feel confident about when to treat and when to refer, and improve the coordination of care between healthcare professionals to optimise outcomes.
