This session will help nurses enhance their knowledge of genetic mutations in melanoma and their role in treatment decision-making. Understanding these genetic drivers will allow nurses to better support patients through the complexities of targeted treatments, immunotherapy, and emerging therapies, contributing to improved patient outcomes and personalised care.
Learning outcomes:

Explain the role of genetic mutations in melanoma progression and treatment, enabling nurses to understand how these mutations influence the selection of targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and emerging treatment options.

Melanie Grimmer is the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Specialist Nurse at The Canberra Hospital. Melanie has been a cancer nurse for 9 years, specialising in melanoma and skin in the last 2 years. She has completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Cancer Nursing and is currently completing a Masters in Advanced Nursing and Leadership. Melanie has a keen interest in educating early career nurses about the strong opportunities cancer nursing has to offer with a focus on advanced practice skills. Melanie enjoys the challenge of learning innovative and exciting new treatments that melanoma and skin cancer utilises and applying how advanced nursing can expand on the patients experience in this field. Melanie has enjoyed connecting with the community of melanoma nurses and enjoys collaborating ideas and improving her practice through a multidisciplinary approach.
