Defining quality in advanced practice nursing

24 June 2024

This webinar explores how nurse practitioners have been evaluating their practice and issues regarding current approaches to evaluation and future considerations. While focusing on nurse practitioners, the issues raised are relevant to all APN roles.

Identifying metrics to evaluate Advanced Nursing practice.

With access to care becoming more difficult, and multiple professions bidding for extra funding from a finite health budget, more questions are being asked of health professions regarding the value of their service. They are asked to provide evidence of the impact and quality of care they provide to meet the demands placed on health care systems.

Quality of care metrics that align with structure, process, and outcomes, are used by organisations and policy makers to assess clinical performance and inform decision making related to resource and funding allocation. A long-standing challenge for the NP profession is to adequately establish the impact of the role regardless of specialty area. The absence of this data and information prevents the profession from advocating for an expansion in workforce, and greater access to NP services for the community.

Results from a recent scoping review will be presented highlighting how NPs are currently evaluating their practice and identifies further work that is required relating to demonstration of impact and approach to evaluation that needs to be considered.

Chair

Prof Mei Krishnasamy
Professor of Nursing, the University of Melbourne; VCCC Alliance Research & Education Lead, Cancer Nursing; Honorary Professor of Cancer Nursing, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

Development of cancer nursing research capability has the potential to enhance patient care, health outcomes and health services. The program champion for the VCCC Alliance Nurse-led Research Program, Prof Mei provides strategic direction and coordinates development of nurse-led research opportunity and implementation-of-evidence to address recognised knowledge and practice gaps across the alliance's seven clinical partners.

A key element of building capability is centred around the Nurse-led Research Hub. The hub aims to improve research literacy, overcome barriers, provide resources, and facilitate networks for education and support opportunities. Prof Mei leads a program of supportive care research that focuses on improving access to and coordination of care for adults with cancer; addressing the impact of social determinants of health on patient outcomes, and development and evaluation of nurse-led interventions. Her research is informed by embedded consumer engagement and encompasses the breadth of patient care from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.
